Sunday Editorial Roundup: Online Game Addiction Overblown

So you called in sick – again – and spent all day in your bathrobe playing World of Warcraft?

Not to worry, according to Theresa Novak of the Corvallis (OR) Gazette-Times:
Internet games do not yet appear among addictions recognized by the… American Psychiatric Association, but apparently critics of the games think we are to consider them another sign of the apocalypse. Why? Because some troubled people are spending far too much time engrossed in the fantasy landscape of games such as World of Warcraft…?

So, what else is new?
Among past leisure activities condemned as works of evil are dice, cards, dancing, the radio, television and, of course, the Internet.

Anything has potential to form an ??ddiction,??and the word has become so overused as to be meaningless…

The alarm about online computer games is more recent, but they really don?? present a greater danger than any other fun activity that can form an unhealthy, obsessive escape for someone whose own life is meaningless…The answer lies in helping to make actual reality more engaging to gaming kids and adults. The real thrill is achieving life goals that have payoffs in terms of esteem and tangibles.
